Whom? Of course, the tales that await us behind the curtain.
Two tales on the tummy: Tale Jurko with a goat and Tale About the Good-one and the Lazy-one
K. J. Erben´s stories Jurko s kozou (Jurko with a goat) and an old bohemian tale O Dobromilovi a Lenimírovi (About the Good-one and the Lazy-one) inspired directrice Bela Schenková to create the Two tales on the tummy. Its most important part is the story-telling and the plot. It is a mixture of comic and edifying elements, a mixture of misfortune and misery with happy endings. However, it is mainly about the untraditional and very modern way of processing the classic method that has been implemented in the puppet theatre-making for children. Because puppet theatre does not only have to be a static matter with a sturdily fixed set and puppets, it can also be hanged, for example, at the tummy! And suddenly, new horizons arise and open the door to variations in the classic puppet leading, to new connections between puppets and live actors or masks. Actually, a harmonica tune inspired the directrice to making the Two tales on the tummy. If a harmonica can be placed on the „tummy“, why could not there be a theatre on the „tummy“. And indeed, it exists!

Karel Jaromír Erben (7. 11. 1811, Miletín pri Jičíne – 21. 11. 1870, Prague)
Czech poet, literary historian, translator. He was one of the topmost representatives of Czech Romanticism. Erben primarily dedicated his time to the poetry and to collecting oral tradition. He was collecting folk songs, idioms, fairytale, etc. He as well wrote many scientific disquisitions, f.e. about St. Catherine, or about J. A. Komenský. He contributed to the translations of the Judicial and Bankruptcy Regulations and the Civil code. Among his most fabled works belong Slavic myths and legends and ballads from The Bouquet of nation´s legends.
Bela Schenková (5. 4. 1966, Bratislava)
Czech directrice, actrice, theatre-maker, script-writer and ring-leader of the ANPU theatre. In 1988, she graduated with Puppetry at the Prague-based DAMU. She gained her experience in the Experimental studio TUJU. She worked with the French ensemble Volière Dromesco and with Divadlo bratov Formanovcov.
In 1999, she founded the ANPU theatre in Prague. Among its most popular plays are: Hugo´s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Shakespeare´s Romeo and Juliet, etc. ANPU follows the old tradition of nomadic theatres. The final version of its shows is mostly based on the contrast between humour&poetry and dramatic tension&suggestive audiovisual ambience (taken from www.anpu.cz).
So far, B. Schenková has mostly focused on work for an adult audience. She rehearsed her first show for families with children in Australia, in 2009. Since then, she has worked on children´s productions regularly. She is our guest for the second time, in 2012, she rehearsed Puss in Boots with the BDNR ensemble. Her view of classical tales and stories has creatively developed into the recent and untraditional connection of the classic puppetry with a modern children´s play.
